Julianna Thomas Shows Us How Black And White Is So Much More Than A Slider In Adobe

The texture and depth created by Julianna Thomas in this short film, “Black & White In Color” is just extraordinary. The images themselves, while presumably not related, are bound by their adjacent cuts and splices and take on a whole new life of their own. The absolute definition of a perfect montage.

The concept and pet peeve explored in this project is the lazy desaturation effect used by many filmmakers in post. The idea shooting and capturing black and white is more than a slider in Adobe. It’s an entire aesthetic with a life of it's own.

It feels like it could be the opening title sequence for an HBO series– Truly exceptional. It reminds you that black and white is more complicated than just taking your footage and taking the color away. It should effect the entire way you approach the image itself.

Julianna Thomas goes a long way to show the power of these two polarized tones. Instead of trying to gush more about it, I'll just let you see it for yourself. These kinds of films are what get me excited about cinematography

One of my biggest pet peeves in art is the lazily-desaturated DSLR video. “Black & White In Color” is my personal response to treating black and white as an editing afterthought.

This short video is the culmination of a year and a half of experimentation with black and white textures. Please note: in some instances, color is unavoidable — dark purples, greens, and blues separate out of black dye within a few minutes.

“Black & White In Color” is the first in a pair of videos that contrast black and white with color, minimalism with maximalism. The paired video is tentatively named “Oversaturated.”
