Big Yawn for Latest Canon 7D Mk II Specs – Time for More Caffeine

by Hugh Brownstone3 Comments

Remember “too big to fail”?  How about: “too big to innovate”? Or maybe “too big to give customers what they want”?

Wow. If the EOS Canon 7D Mark II specs posted over on Canon Rumors are accurate just two weeks before Photokina, we’re in for one big yawn.

Put differently: if Canon is interested in attracting videographers to its DSLR line who are currently considering the Panasonic GH4 or Sony A7s, this isn’t the way to do it.

Unless, of course the list is wrong, or the list doesn’t hint at the power of what’s on it, specifically around the sensor, autofocus, and processors.

It’s possible, I guess.

Remarkably absent from the specifications list (to name just a few):

  • focus peaking
  • zebras
  • clean HDMI out
  • WiFi
  • 4K

In fact, taken altogether, it looks like what a 70D Mk II should be, give or take a few upgrades (and downgrades) – not a 7D Mk II.

Just think about it.

These are the 7D Mk II features that would be considered upgrades to the 70D:

  • GPS
  • Headphone jack
  • Slightly higher frame rate
  • Sync time across the same body
  • Electronic manual focus

These are the 7D Mk II features that would be considered downgrades to the 70D:

  • No touch screen
  • No swivel screen

See what I mean?  But add 4K, and maybe that's a different story.

Look, at this point, I’m just going to say it: you can use all the Canon EF glass you want on the GH4 or A7s and many others with adapters or SpeedBoosters from Metabones.  Or stick with the 70D.

Yes, Canon bodies have lovely ergonomics and straightforward menus.

But no, at the rate the market is moving, that’s no longer enough. It looks like Canon is giving its customers what Canon wants, not its customers want.

I'm hoping I'm wrong.

A Rundown of Canon at Photokina

Via Canon Rumors:

Photokina is only 13 days away, and a lot of companies are already announcing their goods for the show. Canon will be announcing a new DSLR, some new lenses and a few PowerShot cameras. We have conflicting reports of when these announcements are being made. We were initially told that the NDA’s expired on September 5, 2014 in Europe. However, a good source tells us they don’t expect to see the EOS 7D Mark II announced until midnight on September 15, 2014, which is a day before Photokina begins. If anyone can shed light as to when the announcements are, please let us know.

  1. Canon is letting the folks at Magic Lantern do the heavy lifting. I can only pray that they (ML) are being secretly funded by Canon. I’m looking forward to the ML hack that gives me 4k on my mark3.

  2. I belief that many people aré hopping to get canon back into The game but To me thru aré focusing on thief video and cinema división. Lees remember that canon never intended to have the 5d2 what it became, a great option to shot video. This was never a canon strategic.
I personally invested in canon lenses and I am regretting this. Now I must invest in expensive adapter for the gh4 and the sony a7s. Well I am selling them and getting nikon lenses that can also fit on canon cameras with adapters.
In terns of cameras I am moving to the gh4 and the sony but to be hones if video is what we do most we should look into something like the blackmagic next cameras. No they are not perfect but are good in price and offers a lot for the price and the quality.
I also feel that we are looking to get away from lighting our projects and that is just plain wrong, including me, I am not a video trained person, I am a graphic designer that was asked to create a simple video and from there I started. We should look not only into the cameras and sensivity, we should have a complete kit including lighting and also audio. Many items seen really good images in video edited with really bad audio.
You want a great one man camera that it is great for video as well for taking pictures in any condition, the nikon d810. Do not have that budget them get the GH4. Video is 50 percent of your work, like me, them for me in personal the best option is the sony a7s.
I am selling my canon mount lenses. Tokina 16-28, tamron 24-70 new version and the tamron 70-200 also the new version. Going nikon mount on the same lenses. I am only keeping my 35, 50 and 85 contax zeiss and it is because I can change the mount to whatever I need to and I just love those lenses.
    My next set up.
GH4 and metabones adapter for nikon lenses
SONY A7S also metabones adapter for nikon
    Atomos Shogun recorder
    Selling 5D2, 5D3 and 60D all with 4 batteries and each with 2 64gb cards (800x) cards
Hope we all keep moving and investing in glass, audio, lighting, stabilizers and not only on cameras.
To me for now on dslr canon is dead.

  3. Interesting to note that Canon Rumors claims that information is tighter than ever before on the 7D Mark II and that we are potentially up to 10 days away from announcement. When the 70D was announced they were still suggesting the SL1 sensor in it 10 days prior to announcement and no solid specs until 4 days before announcement. Can’t say I buy the specs we have seen.
