I’ve been shooting video professionally for close to a year now, and in that short time I’ve noticed how easy it can be to forget your roots. With Rituals being one of the only commercial videos I have made to have complete creative freedom over, it was only natural to incorporate aspects that are true to me and the co-writer/producer Sam Williams.

I’ve been making videos for close to 10 years, and 7 of those years have been out with mates, skating, rolling, chillin’. It’s what ignited my passion in filmmaking, and what I plan to carry with me throughout all my work.
Sam Williams is a good friend of mine, and our decision to collaborate on a music video was nothing more than a chat over a few drinks. Looking at it from this perspective, it was a video made on no budget, with very limited resources.

With both myself and Sam living over a 100 miles away from each other, it was also a task coming up with a shooting schedule. The decision was made early on to use a concept that could benefit from our position. Using a POV technique, it meant we could potentially shoot at the same time, in different locations and wouldn’t be tied down by a presence of a singular protagonist.

There are lots of POV videos out there, and we have to give credit to work of Saman Keshavarz and Justin Gurnari on the Cinnamon Chasers Luv Deluxe video, as well as all of Mike Manzoori’s cinematography. With POV being an established technique, it also meant that there were many online theories of making the best rig for POV shooting.

We considered a full frontal helmet with attached camera, and used this technique for much of our earlier scenes. We ran my monitor via HDMI to direct as we shot, but this quickly highlighted a few problems. With the term guerilla filmmaking being quite fitting to our style and choices of location, a big helmet with a camera strapped round it brought a lot of un-wanted attention when ‘on-set’. Instead we found that simply holding the camera around someone was viable method, and meant we could shoot whilst remaining inconspicuous.

Yes, the Canon EOS-1D MKIV (reviews) does make some pretty good movies – we seem to ignore it, but now and then we’ll see something that just has to be shared – this time, a movie from Patrick Moreau (from StillMotion). We usually post these on the planet5D cinema, but I think you’ll forgive me for sharing this one here. It might be much like the hypnotic we posted over a year ago… “Hypnotic Ocean Aquarium filmed with Canon 5D mk ii” this one’s getting a lot of views as well.

Quite a combination of technologies going on here! Using both a Canon EOS 5D Mark II (reviews) and a Canon EOS 7D (reviews) as well as several iPads, this creative group has produced a very intriguing music video.

We contacted the creative team and Diane Collins sent us this additional information…

This was made as a promotional piece to present our video work. We wanted to create something fun and original using the latest technology available. The song was pre-recorded using ipad apps for all of the instruments. We shot at KM Photo Studios in NYC and had one day to pre-light and one day to shoot. Time was our biggest challenge as we had a lot of footage to capture in a short period of time and on a tight budget.

All instruments were played using ipad applications

Cameras used: Canon 5D Mark II and 7D – We own the 5D, so that’s why we shot with that camera. We rented the 7D since we wanted to shoot slow motion.

Friend of planet5D, Tom Guilmette just posted an awesome new music video that he shot all by himself with 2 Canon EOS 5D Mark II (reviews) cameras in just a few hours. There has been a lot of discussion about how the Canon HDSLRs are reducing the size of crews needed to make a movie or a music video and this example just shows how easy it is – one guy shot this (and another guy, Torey Champagne, did the editing)! And, if you read Tom’s blog post, you’ll find out an amazing thing about the ISO he used to shoot this! It was HIGH

@saracollaton sent us this one… Kylie Minogue’s new music video was directed and shot by @JosephKahn (website) with Canon HDSLRs. I haven’t found many details yet other than the photo below from eventFilmmaker.com which shows them using what appears to be Canon HDSLRs but we don’t know which ones (tho we can guess that they used the Canon EOS 7D (reviews) due to some of the slow motion).

Cool tidbit of background information on the “Light Outside” video is that the young couple that stars in the video are also the directors. We randomly came across a Christmas greeting video they did for their family and approached them to start in and make a music video with us for this song. They just got hired to do one for American Hi-Fi based on this one. ”
