Here at planet5D, we’re pleased to bring you new and exciting media being created with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. Today, we’re really excited to show you something brand new and different… something old and something new combined. We have seen the new fusion of stills + video done for weddings and engagements and families, why not with high school “senior portraits”? This is the first time we’ve seen this – and it is masterfully done with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. When we first saw the video below, we had to find out more and Joe Simon agreed to help us show you this great new fusion business segment.

“At Joe Simon Wedding Films and Joe Simon Films we create all types of visual media. Based in Austin Texas, joesimonweddingfilms.com creates HD wedding videos and super 8mm/16mm wedding films. At joesimonfilms.com I work as Director of Photography on commercials, shorts, features and music videos. We also do full production on documentaries and extreme sports films. This particular project was brought to life by studio563.com, they are a photography studio based in Austin Texas. Eric Von at Studio 563 who has been shooting seniors for a few years had the idea to take photos and video to create a rock star style video for graduating high school seniors.

We brainstormed ideas and “Senior Sessions” was born!

All the video (except for the wide interview shots) was shot on the Canon 5D MKII. I felt this was the best tool for the job to really get the look I wanted. I used a mix of lenses – 16-35mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.4, 70-200mm f/2.8. My favorite lens to use is the 70-200, the bokeh is gorgeous and the IS stabilizer really helps to keep your image steady.

The filming was done with a mix of tripod and Glidecam 4000HD Pro shots. The Glidecam also works as a great hip brace for shooting handheld shots. The still photos were taken using a Nikon D300.

Audio was recorded via a Canon XHA1 which was used for the 2nd angle during the interview session. We used a Audio Technique 4073a shotgun mic on a boom pole to make sure we got great sound.

Eric picked his favorite shots from the shoot and sent them over to me. From there I took everything into Final Cut Pro for editing. All effects and edits were done in FCP.

Wow was my first thought about this Canon EOS 5D Mark II video when I saw it the first time. The second time, it was just about the same thing… and to think, this video (submitted by a planet5D fan) was this couple’s FIRST video!

Joseph first contacted us a couple of days ago (via the link above hint hint) and after watching, I just had to get them to send some more information so that we could share this with all of you!

“We just found this killer blog and wanted share our first 5D Mark II piece with your viewers.

We’re a wife (Anne) and husband (JVS) duo with tons of experience in the still world and we were just itchin’ for the 5D Mark II’s to start shipping.

When our 5D2′s arrived, we immediately began our search for the perfect location. While cruising around Ft. Worth (Texas, ya’ll) we noticed that the annual stock and rodeo show also included a midway with some amusement rides.

Ok, we had the location, now we needed the subjects. We reached out to one of our past clients (amazing couple) who supplied us with a couple of contacts. A few hours later, we had a young, hip and super-cool dating couple give us the green light.

To keep the shoot flowing at a steady pace, Anne and I sketched / story-boarded every shot. Three hours later, our first shoot was done.

Anne has been working with Final Cut Express (for our still slideshows) since it first became available and upgraded to Final Cut Studio 2 for this piece. It was her first time working with audio (so the learning curve was huge) and she used Soundtrack Pro to edit all of the audio. The overall edit time was a bit longer than she would have liked, but seeing it was her first “moving piece,” a time investment was to be expected.

While our plate is pretty full running a stills studio (jvspictures.com), we also teach lighting workshops for still photographers and we recently launched Cheddar Designs, a solutions for wedding and portrait photographers business.

We’re excited to add this new “stills + motion + audio” offering to our studio and cannot wait to shoot our next piece!

I don’t think you can do it much faster than this… the video and stills were recorded on a Canon 5D mk ii (and a Canon HV20 on the steadycam shots) during the wedding ceremony, and then the movie was prepared and presented to the entire wedding party at the reception! Amazing. Make sure to check out the details on the Bui Brothers site.

“Lan and I were flown to Cancun by Doug and Lawrence (Furious Photographers) to shoot a photographer’s promo video of them. They somehow booked two weddings back to back in Cancun… with a Day After session after the second wedding (which actually won’t happen until tomorrow).

As part of our project we were also delivering a short video for each couple, so we were essentially shooting two videos at each wedding. For Tiffany and Ly, we decided to do a same-day edit of their AMAZING wedding incorporating photos shot by Doug and Lawrence. Their photos were great, and we got some wonderful footage. I suppose you’d call this a same-day fusion-video, using both photos and video together instead of one or the other or two separate presentations.”
