There are no safety issues with 7D firmware including version 1.2.5. The Canon UK web site posted it before they were supposed to, but it will be reposted worldwide within the next few days.

UPDATE: 4pm CT – the 5Dmark2Team discovered that the firmware update is no longer available on the Canon UK site – weird!

Canon EOS 7D firmware update 1.2.5 released – it includes no additional features like audio updates – it is mainly a few bug fixes – please read below for all the details and the download links. Interestingly there is one fix for an “err 02″ problem which I thought was something you had to send the camera back to Canon to repair. That’s good! Our thanks to the 5Dmark2Team for sending us the alert.

The fixes

Firmware Version 1.2.5 incorporates the following improvements and fixes.

Fixed a rare phenomenon in which there were rare cases where movie files taken could not be opened when repeatedly shooting movies with specific CF cards.

Fixed a rare phenomenon in which there were cases where “Err 02″ appeared when repeatedly shooting still images with specific CF cards.

Fixed a phenomenon that occurred when using high-capacity (32 GB or greater) CF cards: If either a CF card with only a little available space remaining or the battery was removed and then reinserted into the camera, and then the user attempted to start shooting movies immediately, shooting would stop.

Improved the writing/reading speeds when using UDMA 7-compatible CF cards.

Fixed a phenomenon that occurred when custom function C.Fn 4-1 was set to assign IS start to the AF stop button on the lens: When used with lenses that do not have an AF stop button, the IS function would not work.

Corrected some mistakes in the menu screens displayed in Arabic and Portuguese. (This applies to models in overseas markets. The models for the Japanese market do not display those languages.)

Who is Trammell Hudson?

Trammell is the guy who wrote the Magic Lantern firmware ‘hack’ – not that ‘hack’ implies bad here. Lots of people are using the firmware to do great things with their Canon EOS 5D Mark II or Canon Rebel T2i/550D (the two flavors of Magic Lantern)

Here’s some of the feature set:

Magic Lantern is an open platform for developing enhancements to the amazing Canon 5D Mark II and 550D/T2i digital SLRs. These cameras are “game changing” for independent film makers:

It allows the use of a wide range of lenses (anything that can be adapted to the EF mount).

The 5D’s 35mm full-frame sensor is larger than the RED ONE’s sensor, Super 35 film. It is approximately the size of VistaVision. This means shallower native depth-of-field than anything on the market, except for the Phantom 65.

The dynamic range and latitude are close to the capabilities of high-end HD cameras.

The low-light performance is currently unrivaled, even by the RED ONE.

Questions!

I’m sure that many of you have questions for Trammell and this is the perfect opportunity to ask him directly. When we do live interviews, there is a chat room where you can post your questions and we’ll try to get to all of them. This is a great way to get involved!

Each live interview is also archived thru the planet5D podcast on iTunes so a day or so after the interview, if you can’t make it live, you’ll be able to watch the replay – but that also means you don’t get to ask questions – so be there live!

If you want to know more about how the interviews work – just check the planet5D iTunes podcast or the planet5D blip.tv channel archive

Be warned tho that Magic Lantern (tho we’ve not heard of any reports of this happening) in rare circumstances could damage your camera or void your warranty (we have to say that to cover our backsides). As we said, we’ve not heard any reports of anything bad happening to anyone’s camera – tho we should also warn you that the firmware may crash which could cause you to lose a recording.

After lots of testing and bug fixing, we believe the new Magic Lantern for 550D firmware 1.0.9 is stable enough to release it to the general public.

You can find it on the main 550D wiki page

Features:

* GUI menus: press the ERASE button to display them

* Bit rate control (QScale parameter) for the H.264 encoder

* Zebra stripes for overexposed / underexposed areas

* Spotmeter, histogram

* Cropmarks (16:9, Cinemascope, Fisheye)

* Simple intervalometer

* Trap Focus: camera takes a picture when something comes in focus

* Wireless trigger with the LCD face sensor & your own hand

* AE bracketing (like on 5D2 ML)

* Rack focus

* Stack focus (Live View only)

* Lens data computation

* Onscreen audio meters

* Manual audio gain, selectable input source, disable AGC and

digital filters

* Display time remaining during video recording

* Debug functions (display CMOS temperature, screenshot, logging)

We also have a new Windows tool for making the cards bootable (EOSCard), and new install & user guides. Even with all the testing this version has received, nobody can guarantee it is bug-free. There is still a small risk in using this software, and we want to fix all the bugs and improve it. Please read the installation instructions carefully!

New developments will continue. Maybe coming soon: customizable ISO, auto QScale, fluent zebras, better UI, scripting… suggestions welcome.

Many thanks to all the Magic Lantern developers, contributors and users who made possible this release!

Firmware changes

Firmware version 1.0.8 incorporates the following fixes.

Fixes a phenomenon in which captured images may become overexposed when using the camera’s built-in flash or an external Speedlite in combination with the lenses listed below:*
a) EF300/4 L IS USM
b) EF28-135/3.5-5.6 IS USM
c) EF75-300/4-5.6 IS USM
d) EF100-400/4.5-5.6 L IS USM

Firmware version 1.0.8 is for cameras with Firmware Version 1.0.5. If the camera’s firmware is already Version 1.0.8, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

Are the previous versions of firmware included in version 1.0.9? Yes, the improvements from the previous version are included.

And, if you’ve never done a firmware upgrade, here’s a how to video that was done for an earlier release. No difference with this version other than the 60D uses a different card.

Firmware version 1.0.9 incorporates the following fixes.

Fixes a phenomenon in which tone jumps become noticeable in some images, depending on the shooting scene, when shooting with the Auto Lighting Optimizer settings (Low / Standard / Strong).

Firmware version 1.0.9 is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.0.8. If the camera’s firmware is already Version 1.0.9, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

Are the previous versions of firmware included in version 1.0.9? Yes, the improvements from the previous version are included.

There was a phenomenon in which the manual recording settings made in C1/C2/C3 were changed and sound could not be recorded if manual sound recording was used in the C1/C2/C3 settings and the camera was subsequently turned off (or if Auto Power Off was activated). This does not occur in modes other than C1/C2/C3.
