Joel Lovell sent us this fascinating explanation why Shepard tones create such haunting feelings to music scores.
Frankly, I had never heard of a Shepard tone but I sure had been affected by them.
I've been a huge fan of the movie “Interstellar” since it came out (sorry Barry) and one of the big factors is Hans Zimmer's music score. I don't know why it gripped me but the use of shepard tone could be one big factor (now that I know what they are LOL!).
And my first real exposure was during those amazing stairs in Super Mario (see video)… I never understood how that worked, now I do!
