You can spend a good bit of time combing thru the My RØDE Reel 2017 winners as they had a wide variety of categories and many of them are indeed marvelous.
I'll warn you tho… “Fireflies” (best drama) might rip your heart out if you're a parent! (I think I would have picked that one over the ‘judge's prize' winner, but that's one reason why these are so fun – everyone has an opinion!)

‘MIDNIGHT TOKER’ TAKES OUT JUDGES’ PRIZE
Friday 4th AUGUST, 2017, Sydney Australia– Leading pro-audio brand RØDE Microphones is excited to announce ‘My RØDE Reel’ has wrapped its fourth year, with a record 1520 films entered (up 24% from 2016’s 1224 films), along with another 1520 behind-the-scenes films. It confirms My RØDE Reel’s status as The World’s Largest Short Film Competition.
The global reach continues to rise as well, with entries coming in from over 86 countries, including an enormous 356 films from China, a year-on-year increase of 138%.
RØDE Microphones was proud to award 11 genre prizes, 8 technical prizes and 4 regional prizes (China, India, Japan and South Korea) as well as the major categories (listed below).
In a hotly contested field, the winner for the Judges’ Prize for 2017 is comedy-thriller Midnight Toker, from Canadian filmmaking team Camp 905 (whose entry Tik-Tik won Best Female Filmmaker in 2016). Director Bea Macapagal is the first female filmmaker to win the top gong in the competition’s history.
Judge Phillip Bloom said Midnight Toker was, “A really fun homage to classic films. Very well executed both visually and in audio, with great direction. I was impressed and entertained. A clever film.”
My RØDE Reel Ambassador and Judge, actor-director Matilda Brown was blown away by the standard. “I thought these films were outstanding and such a high standard. I have judged so many film comps and I really was so impressed by these films. I'm a tough critic but I was humbled and excited by these films. Well done, everyone.”
