“Hollywood’s Greatest Trick” – The Incredibly Sad Story Behind the Hollywood VFX Industry

by Keith Alvendia1 Comment

I found this somewhere on Facebook this morning and spent the 3o minutes watching and well, I was stunned! I had heard things about the VFX business being tough, but man, this is brutal.

Personally, I've kind of given up on watching a lot of the “action” movies like Superman, Spiderman, and others because frankly they're just visual effects porn – with very little story other than destroying city block after city block in some grandiose unrealistic fashion. Boring.

But I also realize it takes an army to create those effects. And to watch this short and see the horrid way they're being treated makes me even less likely to watch.

I was also surprised to see the bits where they're making the actors' and actresses' faces more youthful and less human. Another mind blown. I mean I realize this is movie making and it is all a story, but man, there's a lot of work in making people pretty.

Visual effects artists are responsible for some of the most iconic moments in movie history. The top 10 highest grossing films of 2016 all contained computer generated imagery. But while Hollywood's profits grow, the visual effects artists struggle for fair pay, representation and recognition beyond the most prestigious award in film – an Oscar.

  1. Thanks for posting this. I watched the video. I remember the whole Digital Domain failure along with using interns for ‘free’. How everyone gets “more” than those that made the movie look great. The whole “Gravity” movie was VFX. Point well taken… Ms Bullock gets $62million and the VFX people go and work another job so they can eat.
