The Sony 70-200mm G-Master is FINALLY Shipping – Is It Worth The Price?

by Bret Hoy1 Comment

Stores are finally shipping out the highly anticipated Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 G-Master OSS Lens. This is coming after months of online stores across the world being out of stock.

The fact that the lens has been so out of stock, and especially at that price point shows how voraciously desired it’s been among Sony shooters and should be a real sign to manufacturers about what these shooters want. At almost $1,000 above the Canon alternative, it’s shown that Sony dedicated shooters aren’t too anxious to use adapters every day and are willing to spend extra to avoid that hassle.

The lens itself looks beautiful as John Sison and that1cameraguy on YouTube have shown in their reviews. Solid construction and design (building off the backs of the iconic Canon 70-200mm, mind you) show that it’s a serious lens for professionals who are ready to entirely jump the Canon/Nikon ship.

Speaking from personal experience, I’ve always found that Sony’s optics were impeccable, but the features surrounding those optics a bit lack luster. Luckily, the Sony FE 70-200mm G-Master has changed that.

The question is really, do you think that it’s worth the extra $1,000 you’ll spend getting it on your camera. For most, the cost will exceed the price of the body you’re shooting on. If you’re spending it on quality glass, then it’s worth it. If you feel that it’s not giving you more than what Canon already offers, that’s where it could fall flat.

Do you think it’s worth it?

Stores are now shipping out the 70-200mm GM August preorders

Via Sony Alpha Rumors:

The Sony 70-200mm GM Lens was announced 10 months ago and it’s still impossible to find it in Stock anywhere in the world. The small good news is that it seems something changed this week: SAR readers informed me that August preorders on various US stores are now shipping out.

I have no reliable info about the cause of that huge delay. My guess is that Sony had to fix some sort of issues on the production line or on the lens design. Meantime check out the Sony 70-200 G-Master Video Review by That1cameraguy to learn more about the lens that one day might be yours :)

  1. I note the B&H complaint about the lens’s slow focus acquisition. The reviewer has probably never heard of the warranty of implied merchantability. He can, in principle, force Sony to give him his money back, on the basis that this lens does not perform as well as most lenses of this type.
