The Canon C300 and C300 Mark II Get A Really Solid and Useful Firmware Update

by Bret Hoy1 Comment

On December 13th, Canon is releasing a pretty substantial firmware update for the Canon C300 Mark II and the original C300.

It’s not all that surprising that they’re still supporting the original C300 because it’s such an important camera to so many filmmakers. What does surprise me however is the size of the firmware update and what it includes.

Nestled among the usual support for new lenses and zoom servos are a couple of updates that really round out both cameras. The ability to set zebras below 65% is actually a really underrated feature. As Brent Ramsey, the Technical Advisor at Canon USA explains, when you’re recording in Canon log, using zebras to pinpoint mid-tone exposure is crucial—and most cameras don’t offer that. It’s a pretty fantastic feature for the C300 Mark II.

Also useful is the much needed update to the shutter angle function. Now you can set it as priority without affecting your other exposure controls. This update seems a bit late, but better late than never, as they say.

Overall, this update shows that Canon is still going to show the C300 some love and prepare it for a variety of accessories that Canon’s releasing over the next few years. This should give some release to those shooters that aren’t ready to upgrade from their Mark I’s to Mark II’s.
