Teradek Takes An Impressive Step Forward With the New BOLT 1000 and 3000 with ZERO Delay Transmission

Teradek has become virtually synonymous with wireless video transmission in the camera industry. And this is for good reason.

For years, they’ve made their name making high quality systems and have chosen to truly specialize in this video transmission niche. And I like that. It allows them to research and develop with incredible focus and that focus is on full display with their most recent announcement.

Teradek just announced that they’re able to send visually lossless 4:2:2 video with less than 0.001 seconds (yes, that is in fact, one millisecond) of delay. Not only is that pretty unbelievable, it’s only a part of what makes this update from Teradek BOLT system so special. The Teradek BOLT is smaller and lighter than it's ever been and gives you more range for your cash. What’s really exciting about this upgrade isn’t just the speed and range though. It gives you options of how to view and ingest your footage.

This new and upgraded BOLT features 3D LUT Integration that allows you to, “upload your own LUTs using the free BoltManager software or select from a number of built-in presets using Bolt’s OSD.” This may not seem like a huge deal, but often this is so important in communicating with clients or others on set. This allows collaboration and fine-tuning that otherwise might be missed. Also, if the only way your client's have to view your footage on set is by watching the desaturated and flat Log files, you'll find them less enthused than they would be otherwise. Being able to easily show them how gorgeous that footage actually is is invaluable.

Possibly my favorite addition is the USB 3.0 GRAB Engine. This allows you to, “ingest a Bolt feed directly into a computer or your DIT cart without any added delay or loss of quality.” I don’t find myself always needing this, but it shows the immense power of these small devices. This also provides an amazing opportunity to quickly grab and edit dailies.

Teradek has managed to wrestle an impressive amount of truly useful and functional upgrades into a smaller and more rugged body. Do you think you could use this kind of tech on your shoots?
