When you start shooting video, you’re always looking for that next thing to take your imagery up a notch. There are a million different ways to garner a stronger response to your images from the audience, none more famous and sought after than the anamorphic look. And for as many people have tried to attain the anamorphic look, there are as many different methods on how to get it. Even going to using old projector lenses and fishing line across your matte boxes.
The problem was that there was no easy way to get this look. The flares, the distortion, the oval bokeh – these are as good as gold for some cinematographers. But how do you get it?!
SLR Magic has always had their mind at least a little bit trained on the idea of bringing anamorphic to the masses. They originally created an anamorphic squeeze that would mount onto the filter threads of your lenses and provide a 1.33 squeeze.
That anamorphic look became a little bit easier to get. But there was yet another problem with this solution — It only worked on lenses with specific filter diameters.
This really left the shooter with a few problems. You could only adapt certain lenses, and as much as I’m trying to not knock SLR Magic… it really wasn’t the best solution.
Well, they’ve solved that and taken a MASSIVE step forward in anamorphic cinematography with their newest addition to their lens library – The SLR Magic Anamorphot-Cine Lenses.
While the lenses might still be a bit out of the price range of the average shooter, they’re well within the range of the shooters that wish to rent for their projects and films.
Tim Fok at cinema5D was lucky enough to hook up with SLRMagic and write a review on their set of 35mm, 50mm and 70mm anamorphic lenses. I have a few problems with parts of the image that I saw, but I am all in all, very impressed with what I’m seeing.
Maybe the next time you’re shooting your passion project, you’ll be able to capture that look you've always dreamt of. And SLR Magic might be the ones to make it happen.
The Milliner – SLR Magic Anamorphot-Cine Lens Review
SLR Magic Anamorphot-Cine Lenses are a set of vintage look anamorphics. I had a chance to review the set, producing the above short film shot exclusively on them.
I haven’t done a personal project for a while, so when the opportunity to do one came about, I wanted to try something completely new from a technical perspective. You can read more about the project itself here.
I had never used anamorphic lenses on a full project before, so when the SLR Magic Anamorphot-Cine surfaced some months ago I was naturally very intrigued.
Anamorphic image capture is not as straight forward as spherical, despite growing in popularity and accessibility, much like every other piece of technology these days. Affordable, reliable, genuine anamorphic lensing are still relatively hard to come by.
I met Andrew from SLR Magic at BVE this year and was fortunate enough to get a full set of their Anamorphot-Cine Lenses to check out.
Before I go on I must state that this isn’t a technical review, but rather some educated observations from real world use. I didn’t have much time to test them other than when shooting this piece, but I feel this kind of use is equally if not more important than rigid test shots.
It was a good camera to pick for the spec; 4K in mostly 50p, good on the shoulder and modest in maintenance (low card and battery usage).
