Watch These Two Great Interviews with Movie Editing Great Walter Murch by Cinematographer Rick Young.

When the great movie editor Walter Murch speaks, I've been told by those who've met or worked with him, the wise listen. Perth-based globetrotting cinematographer Rick Young of the Movie Machine website is, clearly, wise.

Mr Young recently recorded two interviews with Mr Murch and I recommend them. They cover topics much-discussed in the industry lately such as contemporary NLEs, and the pros and cons of 4K and greater resolutions. Mr Murch also shares some insights into working with Marlon Brando and Francis Ford Coppola.

To my shame, I must admit to having the names of only two great movie editors at the top of my head at any time, Thelma Schoonmaker and Walter Murch. To the movie industry’s shame, I know more about Mr. Murch than I do about Ms Schoonmaker due to the articles on Mr. Murch, the video interviews, and the books written by him and about him.

I have read variations on the saying that “Walter Murch is considered by many to be without peer in the profession” numerous times online and in print. Another unique thing about him is that he is as accomplished a sound editor as he is a movie editor.

One book about Walter Murch played a role in my own moviemaking, ‘Behind the Seen: How Walter Murch Edited Cold Mountain’, by determining for me that Apple’s Final Cut Pro would be my non-linear editing system of choice.

Other Walter Murch books are more essential for all moviemakers: ‘The Conversations’ by Michael Ondaatje and ‘In the Blink of an Eye: A Perspective on Film Editing’.

There is also ‘Audio-Vision: Sound on Screen’ by Michael Chion but I have not read it and cannot tell how much content it includes about Murch and his work and ideas. I lost my copy of ‘In the Blink of an Eye’ some time ago, most likely loaning it to the inevitable “friend” who never returned it.

In alignment with one of the topics discussed, Mr. Young shot the interview with his JVC GY-LS300 4K-capable, Micro Four Thirds-mount Super 35 video camera.

The LS300 has turned out to be the successor to the legendary Panasonic AF100 interchangeable lens MFT video camera that so many of us were hoping Panasonic would come out with. Instead they announced the fixed lens Panasonic DVX200, a worthy camera in its own right, I am told.

Walter Murch 2015: 4K technology and beyond

In this, the second part of the 2015 interview with Walter Murch, Walter talks about the technological changes we have seen over many decades, and how these have affected the filmmaking process. Walter comments on 4K, now widely available to both professionals and consumers, and how the increased resolution impacts on the filmmaking process.
