SYNOPSIS
Darren and Sophie would seem to have a perfect romance, but when Darren's deep-seated jealousies and baseless suspicions turn to rage and violence, Sophie goes to the one thing she trusts — her music. The drums, for Sophie, are an outlet, a release, an escape – salvation. She leans in, takes out her feelings on their taut heads, venting her emotions but also feeling a growing sense of power, and control, and strength.

The Fragile Beat of the Heart is a beautifully filmed depiction of the harsh and uncertain edges of modern love. It is a testament to the power of music – and to the inspiring empowerment of a proud and ultimately fearless woman.

From PHiLLYK Director of the project:

Viewers are often curious to know – Where does the inspiration for a film come from?

In The Fragile Beat of the Heart, it all started in a humble drum studio in Brooklyn. The spark for this project was lit when I experienced the cathartic effects of the age old instrument and its ability to channel raw emotions like rage, grief, and fear and turn them into something beautiful.

The Fragile Beat of the Heart

After several high profile domestic abuse cases made headlines, I began imagining the drumset as a symbol of empowerment for those who had been made powerless.

I imagined the drums as a main character in the narrative, a place where someone trapped in an abusive relationship might turn to find solace.

Fast forward a few months to the creation of characters Darren and Sophie, who would seem to have a perfect romance — however, things aren’t always what they seem on the surface. When Darren's deep-seated jealousies and baseless suspicions turn to rage and violence, Sophie turns to the one thing she trusts — her music. The drums, for Sophie, are an outlet, an escape – salvation.

The Fragile Beat of the Heart is a beautifully filmed depiction of the harsh and uncertain edges of marred, modern love. It is a testament to the power of music – and to the inspiring empowerment of a proud and ultimately fearless woman.
The 10-minute short was filmed by cinematographer Julien Lasseur (a finalist in the current season of Project Greenlight) on a Canon 5D Mark iii with Leica-R lenses. It was scored by legendary jazz drummer, Phil Young (Dizzy Gallespie, Jimmy Hendrix) and stars husband and wife duo, Ryan Hanna King and Brenda Koo.

As a labor of love, the film aims to raise awareness and incite conversation about domestic violence, a topic often shied away from in the mainstream.
