Motion9, Camera Cages & Accessories Maker, Releases Four Great New Products, With More To Follow

One of my favorite hybrid camera accessories makers, Motion9, released three new products just before IBC in Amsterdam. Four really, if you count two different sizes of a new type of slider as, effectively, two separate products.

Motion9 seems to be one of the most steadily innovative makers of camera cages and for the last year have been applying their design and CNC manufacturing skills to sliders as well.

As a user of their Cube Mix GH4/3 camera cage for the Panasonic Lumix GH4, I appreciate Motion9 products’ extra attention to detail and thus to their usability.

Motion9’s Cube R2s camera cage, made for both of Sony’s most recently announced A7 series, is both an evolution of the GH4 cage’s many useful features and a revolution in adding usability to what is, frankly, one of my least favorite camera body form factors.

After trying a Sony A7S for a week or two last year then a Sony A7 II more recently for a much shorter duration at a Sony Kiosk in a nearby Sydney suburb, I found the GH4’s size and design far more usable to the point where the camera almost leaps into my hands.

The Motion9 Cube R2S camera cage fits the Sony A7R II and A7S II hybrid mirrorless cameras. It has plenty of adjustability and other items in the Motion9 product lines can be easily attached to it. Image extracted from a Motion9 press release composite then graded in Macphun Tonality Pro.

The Motion9 LineCam Ground Kit extends the capabilities of the LineCam 34 and LineCam 46 tripod-mounted sliders so they can also be used on flat surfaces or the ground. In contrast, all Sony A7-series cameras, even after their recent minor redesign, look and feel like plumbers’ wrenches or machine tools. Shiny, hard and get the job done, certainly, but not the sort of semi-organic object I want to carry about in my hands all the time. Old school, as Michael Reichmann of Luminous Landscape recently described the Sony A7-series body design.

The Sony cameras, having sensors twice the size of the GH4’s, also require bigger, heavier lenses. That combination of size and weight demands even sturdier grip options in a cage. And Motion9 has provided exactly that in its cage for the A7S II and A7R II.

All that aside for the time being, consider the specs inside each of these two latest A7-series cameras. Massive megapixel count in the A7R II for shooting stills that need to be blown up large, and ultra-high sensitivity in the much smaller sensor of the A7S II. Then factor in the lenses made for both by Sony, Zeiss and others. Incredibly promising, if one can afford and carry it all. Especially for those of us who are, as it were, hybrid creatives with one foot in the photography world and the other in the moviemaking camp.

It is the many little things that the folks at Motion9 excel at and that I appreciate so much. Especially given my hands were permanently damaged in a make-work temp job in an unsafe environment several years ago, limiting what I can hold and how I must hold it.

The little screw-in cylindrical handle I have found so useful in my GH4 cage has carried over to the Cube R2s cage. The handle that comes with the R2s is an evolved version of Motion9’s earlier Classic Handle. Likewise the cable protector of the R2s doubles as a very effective side handle. All this makes for a number of different ways of safely carrying and holding your caged camera.

If the quality of Motion9’s CNC manufacturing is as good with the R2s as it is with their GH4 cage, then it should be just as tactile, just as well-balanced and just as easily handled.

While I continue to have reservations about the Sony A7-series’ over-mechanical look and feel, I would have no reservations at all about enclosing an A7R II or A7S II in Motion9’s Cube R2s.

And so on to other Motion9 products. The South Korea-based team at Motion9 released videos on the R2s and LineCam Ground Kit just before IBC and I am sure videos on their Single LineCam sliders will be forthcoming.

Also forthcoming, according to a notice on the Motion9 website front page, are:

 • Cube Shogun One-Touch Sunhood.
 • Counter LineCam.
 • RodRiser Pro.
 • LineCam Motor Kit.

No details about any of these products are available yet, so the Motion9 website bears checking out every so often, or you can send them a note via their contact page and ask to be placed on their mailing list.
