You say the word, “ARRI” and I hear, “Pro.” I also hear my fiancé asking about why there’s a 5 grand charge on the credit card. There are brands where you expect to pay a premium to be in the, “club.” Zeiss. Hasselblad. These are companies that draw a response in those in the industry before we even discuss the individual product.
You may find it difficult to justify investing the capital it takes to get into the ARRI lighting world, but the new ARRI SkyPanel S60 and S30 go a long way to convince you it’s worth it.
Offering full control of color temperature from 2,800 K to 10,000 K (!!) the SkyPanel opens up a wider range of color options—that’s without even mentioning the plus and minus green correction. These options give you impressive flexibility when having to cope with mixed light and other wild cards that you might find on location. That is, if you’re willing to pay.
What draws me personally to this light so much is it’s ability to output tremendous amounts of light. ARRI claims that the Skypanel S60 is, “Bright than a 2 KW Tungsten soft light or a 6 kw Tungsten space light.” For those in the LED universe (including me) it’s been so difficult to compete with the natural light of the sun. That’s now a possibility, if you’re willing to pay.
This powerful hardware is reined in and controlled by an interface that looks as simple as it can get while still being form fitting enough to be easily transportable. The S30 can even run at 100% on battery power! Output with portability… Can you imagine what you could accomplish? That is, if you are willing to pay.
The ARRI SkyPanel S60-C LED Softlight is available for pre-order at B&H for $6,250.00.
The new ARRI SkyPanel is an exceptionally versatile LED soft light – compact, fully tuneable and delivering light of unsurpassed power and quality. Because different application areas call for different lighting needs, SkyPanel has been designed as a series of fixtures. The S60 is the mid-range model and the S30 is the smaller, more portable version. With SkyPanel, the sky is limitless…
SkyPanel ‘C’ (Color) versions have the ability to adjust the correlated color temperature anywhere between 2,800 K and 10,000 K, with excellent color rendition over the entire range. Full plus and minus green correction can be achieved with the simple turn of a knob, and in addition to CCT control, vivid color selection and saturation adjustment is also possible.
Applications for this controllability range from quickly adjusting the CCT to set the mood of a scene, to selecting the perfect green color to wash a greenscreen. Each LED light engine is computer calibrated in order to ensure unit-to-unit and batch-to-batch consistency, as well as accurate color temperatures. The SkyPanel series of lights also works in concert with the L-Series, ARRI's LED Fresnel line, perfectly.
The SkyPanel user interface is designed to be incredibly easy to use, but also to make a wide range of controls available to the user, all at the same time. With three simple knobs, the color temperature, green/magenta point, intensity, hue and saturation can be adjusted instantly. People who have never used the light before find the interface effective and intuitive. In addition to the on-board controls, all functions can be remotely adjusted via DMX or LAN network connections.
