I’m an a7S shooter and with that, you get many good and bad things. I’m not one of those people that think my camera is perfect. In fact, many mirrorless shooters like me are starting to feel the frustration of the small, unwieldy form. I grew up on Canon. I thought I knew what a camera was supposed to feel like. Fortunately, with the body upgrades Sony has made with the a7 II and a7R II alike, we’re moving towards a future of more pleasant ergonomics.
Sometimes that’s still not enough.
When we’re choosing a camera, we choose image quality, obviously, but beyond that we’re looking to find features that help us create a relationship between the gear and the image. We want features that open up doors, new angles and new takes that we wouldn’t have tried before.
In the past, LockCircle has released camera cages for the A7 and GH4 mirrorless systems and they have features that help the filmmaker get what they need. A wide array of ¼ and 3/8 inch threads, and a solid Lockport for the eternally frustrating a7S HDMI port. (Side note: I’d dig some 15mm Rod Support on the base)
With their newly released BoomBooster, they have opened up that door to many filmmakers to get those shots that they may not have been able to get before. They make a strong argument for the functionality of this BoomBooster as well. In the age of sensor stabilization that we’re faster and faster being propelled into, tools like shoulder rigs and the Boombooster become even more effective at getting a smooth image.
In addition to providing the stabilization, you have 80 ¼ -20 and 34 3/8 -16 threaded holes giving you the real estate you need to efficiently attach your accessories.
The greatest part about this is the form. You get the type of functionality that you can achieve with a shoulder rig, but in a much more agile package. This means that it can be used for those run and gun situations and yet also be light enough (200 grams) to use in other casual scenarios with the functionality to hold all of your professional accessories.
In the end we’re not just discussing a piece of equipment to help you hold your camera. You have to find the way to get the gear to work for you—and the BoomBooster, like shoulder rigs and other stabilization gives you those options.
