Sony Strategy is an Indie Filmmaker’s Wet Dream

by Hugh Brownstone1 Comment

What would YOU call their number one strategy, which reads “Apply technologies in the high-end professional sphere to consumer products;” highlights 4K, high frame rate and wide color gamut as the proof points; and defines its number two strategy thusly: ”Establish ecosystem of strong differentiated products centered around our α mount system”? Thought so.

This looks so spot-on that I had to convince myself it wasn’t an April Fool’s joke – but there it was, an investors’ deck, on sony.net, their official site.

Now, it has to be written that this is the strategy for their Imaging Products & Solutions (IP&S) business unit, one of five.

And IP&S numbers are challenging, with sales continuing to contract through 2015 (Sony booked sales of ¥741.2B for FY 2013 vs. ¥720Bfor FY 2014 and is forecasting ¥690 in 2015, with operating income forecast to go down almost 10% to ¥50B  –even though operating income doubled from ¥26.3B vs ¥54.7B from ’13 to ‘14).

But in those challenging numbers is the good news: it appears Sony has concluded that the only way to punch their way out is to deliver stellar products and value – like the A7s [B&H | Amazon] a6000 [B&H | Amazon].
