To publicize its new 4K EOS C300 Mark II Digital Cinema Camera, Canon has released a terrific short movie titled ‘Trick Shot’, the story of a long con played short and fast by a three-person family grifter team traveling across the open desert to pay off the son’s gambling debt.

The artfully written and produced tale shows off the camera’s capabilities well and with excellent entertainment value to boot. The movie’s behind-the-scenes video features comments on the C300 Mark II’s design, engineering and sensors by DP Gale Tattersall and Director Evan Kauffmann, while the XC10 4K camcorder plays an impressive role as a drone cam.

The artfully written and produced tale shows off the camera’s capabilities well and with excellent entertainment value. The movie’s behind-the-scenes video features DP Gale Tattersall, Director Evan Kauffmann and others conveying on their impressions of the EOS C300 Mark II, its sensor and especially its pre-tested and proven 15-stop high dynamic range.

Director Kauffmann praises the camera for its suitability to “run-and-gun, docu-style filming” and the fact that “just out of the box it just works”.

DP Tattersall states that “it’s probably the most versatile camera I’ve come across”, citing its 14 to 15 stops of dynamic range. “That’s a game changer to me.”

He also has good words to say about the quality of the sensors in the C300 and C500 EOS cameras and how they handle actors: “The C300 seems seems to be a very gentle camera on skin tones.”

As I watched ‘Trick Shot’ and shared it with my BFF who enjoyed it enormously, I thought back to the movie that introduced the original C300 to the world, Vince LaForet’s ‘Möbius’, also shot in the desert but with a much smaller cast and crew.

‘Trick Shot’ is a great way to show off what I want to see coming from Canon’s Cinema EOS division for a hard core, bigger budget, higher-proved though still affordable movie camera. It looks like Canon has really got the synergy between design, engineering, optics and sensors worked out now with the C300 Mark II.
