Atomos has announced the May 1 launch of a 25%-off student discount purchase scheme with proof of enrollment in a media, film or photography studies unit, course or degree. The generous educational discount also applies to those purchasing on behalf of a school, university or other educational institution.
Atomos claims that this is one of _the_ most generous student discounts in the industry. The Atomos Education Discount page on the Atomos website contains a three-point ‘How to claim your discount’ section and does not include strict definitions of qualifying students, courses or institutions as some industry discount schemes do.
As a sometime teacher in public schools, universities, private colleges and my own offerings direct to students I can personally attest to how ever-present budget constraints can cripple educational institution’s ability to do their job well. I eventually, reluctantly, gave up teaching because conditions and budgets had deteriorated so far beyond our ability to give students the hands-on experience they needed to learn and to be prepared for careers or avocations.
As a continuing, lifelong student mostly using online education right now to stay up to speed in a constantly evolving industry and to learn the new skills that it, employers and projects demand, I know firsthand how lack of access to the right gear can be crippling.
I welcome Atomos’ educational discount scheme in principle, and for its apparent openness to contemporary realities, and I also applaud their 3-year extended warranty on all products. Australia for one needs real investment in the future of its creative industries and educational institutions. If governments are now refusing to do so then private Australian companies like Atomos need to step up to the plate. As indeed I hope occurs elsewhere too.
I hope that large numbers of students will take advantage of the Atomos student discount scheme. I know I most certainly need to. As a moviemaker, I need to be constantly learning new equipment hands-on and via real projects, and I need the firsthand, practical knowledge to write about it with insight and the benefit of real experience. Especially about such groundbreaking hardware as the Shogun.
I encourage other movie production hardware makers out there to follow Atomos’ excellent lead and do the same. [bctt tweet=”NAB 2015: Atomos ‘Future Guarantee’ for more affordability to future moviemakers + 3-year warranty”]
