RØDE, the Sydney-based, globally-popular maker of affordable, innovative microphones for moviemakers, singers and musicians, has just announced that its groundbreaking RØDELink Digital Wireless Filmmaker Kit is now shipping everywhere.
First in a series of digital wireless connection solutions, the Filmmaker Kit will particularly appeal to independent moviemakers needing a reliable wireless recording solution for unpredictable conditions on location. It will also be attractive to all moviemakers needing to replace existing wireless solutions in the face of widespread contractions of the radio spectrum.
In RØDE’s press release, company Founder and President Peter Freedman writes of his 15-year dream of providing wireless solutions to customers everywhere.
For the past year or so, Australian moviemakers in particular have been living something of a nightmare, with threats of the radio spectrum formerly available to wireless microphone users being radically contracted if not removed altogether.
Even before the federal government made its initial spectrum loss announcement, moviemakers using traditional wireless solutions reported wide variations in spectrum availability and freedom from interference. I suspect the situation may be similar wherever moviemakers find themselves.
Rather than trying to fix existing wireless microphone technology, RØDE has thought different and sought a digital solution instead. In the process it came up with a product that, from what I have seen in operation in a noisy factory environment full of electronically-controlled production machines with possible electromagnetic emissions, handles these situations brilliantly.
Independent moviemaking is an oftentimes challenging process, and it is a real boon to have dependable, high quality production tools to take the edge off the common stresses we undergo with too-small budgets, unfamiliar borrowed gear or under-experienced crews.
I look forward to seeing what else RØDE comes up with by way of wireless solutions. In the small, overworked crews and often cluttered improvised sets of independent movie production, cables strewn all round the place can be overlooked dangers to the unwary. Replacing at least some of them with wireless connections will make moviemaking safer for us all.
