U.S. Gimbal Maker DEFY Shakes Things Up (Hah!) with G2X

This Phoenix, AZ-based firm has all of the ingredients – hip team, awesome web site, great tag line (“Built by Cinematographers, For Cinematographers”), growing track record and reputation – and now, a 3-axis gimbal for $1995, their new G2X.

Just under a month ago we compared the $1,300 CAME-TV 7800 to the $3,999 MoVI M5.

Our takeaway:

“If Freefly’s MoVI M5 is the BMW of 3-axis gimbals, CAME-TV’s 7800 is the Hyundai: an ambitious, low-priced alternative inspired by the original that offers a legitimate set of trade-offs, and can definitely get you from points A to B.”

It looks like DEFY’s ambition for its new G2X is loftier: a half-price BMW that gives up pretty much nothing to the M5 except load capacity (weight limit is a bit lighter than the other two at 3.5 lbs.), standard remote operator capability (the gimbal is pre-wired but the controllers are extra) and software fine-tuning – but then adds a novel twist with built-in stand “via inverted orientation for balancing” with a claimed ability to “balance in 3 minutes.”

Whoa.

We haven’t been able to get our hands on one, so we don’t know if that three minute claim really holds up.

But what we do see in the photos appears to be a truly tool-less gimbal and an elegant simplicity which hints at something special for GH4/A7s/5D/7D users.

DEFY G2x Gimbal

Via DEFY:

The DEFY G2x is the lightest, most powerful gimbal in its class. Designed to give filmmakers from all genres the ability to have precisely accurate stability all squeezed into a compact, extremely light and powerful gimbal that we are introducing as the DEFY G2X. This little guy packs a punch with features like pre-selected auto tuned modes for different camera weights allowing users to bypass the need for software and calibration. We also removed the need to use a stand by balancing in an inverted, flat-top configuration to go out of the box and filming in as little as three minutes. The auto sensing IMU allows users to choose the orientation of the gimbal (inverted or upright) for better ergonomics and camera positioning allowing users to film for hours. The G2X carries lightweight mirror less cameras such as an A7s or GH4 and common DSLRs.

INTRODUCING: THE REDEFINED G2X GIMBAL

At DEFY we believe good design informs smart decisions which is why we re-built the G2 from the ground up. Designed to give filmmakers from all genres the ability to have precisely accurate stability all squeezed into a compact, extremely light and powerful gimbal that we are introducing as the DEFY G2X. We have listened to filmmakers for well over a year and built a gimbal that packs a punch yet remains dead simple to use with features like our pre-selected auto tuned modes for different camera weights allowing users to bypass the need for software and calibration. The G2X carries lightweight mirrorless cameras such as an A7s or GH4 and up to a DSLR such as a Canon 5D. All of this provides buttery smooth footage without the bulk of an overly heavy gimbal to carry around. Best of all, the DEFY G2X is completely machined, hand assembled, and tested in our facility located in Phoenix, Arizona.

Created and Crafted by the makers of DEFY for a price of $1995 is proof once again that our products are built for filmmakers by filmmakers.
