Rocket Rooster Debuts Great Cinematic Presets for Processing Raw Footage

Hot on the heels of their second movie looks set, Rocket Rooster Cinema Colour, Rocket Rooster has released a great set of cinematic color presets for grading your raw movie footage in Adobe Camera Raw. The Rocket Rooster Raw Presets collection is effective, affordable and produces great results fast.

While writing our recent report on Rocket Rooster Cinema Colour — An Impressive, Affordable Cinematic Looks 3D LUT Set from Rocket Rooster — Kevin Davies mentioned that more post-production software would be on its way later this year and his next release turned up way faster than I could have guessed.

As with his 3D LUT set, I put some items from Rocket Rooster Raw Presets into action with some archival footage shot last year. Rocket Rooster’s website amply shows off many of the color looks from the set so I chose RR Black and White2 raw preset for two clips out of three.

Adding the raw presets is straightforward. As the Read Me file included with the set shows, copy them into Camera Raw following this path —

~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/Settings/… — then restart the program and add your Cinema DNG files. Go to the Presets tab and get to work.

Rocket Rooster has published a tutorial on its blog showing you the workflow Kevin Davies uses in his work at Cinema DNG colour correction tutorial. All fairly straightforward especially if you already use Camera Raw to process your digital stills.

With my three clips I found I didn’t have to do a great deal extra within Camera Raw to make them look good enough. RR Black and White2 worked well on two and I chose the RR Prima Kd 5207 vis3 raw preset for the third clip. All three were shot under dull light and easily rendered my footage very close to how I had visualized it when shooting. Some enhancements via Camera Raw’s Basics and Tone Curve tabs and I was done.

I found the process so rewarding I am itching to shoot more raw movie footage soon. Perhaps it is time to go get the latest version of Magic Lantern to use on my elderly 5D Mark II, unless I can lay hands on a Blackmagic Cinema Camera or another raw shooter.

Rocket Rooster Raw Presets includes 30 cinematic looks presets and is available for USD6.99.
