planet5D Simple Sunday Survey – what’s the best DSLR for video?

by planetMitch1 Comment

I have a lot of things in mind to do for our subscribers to the daily planet5D emails – and I've also been interested in finding out more about what gear readers are interested in as well as what they are buying and using.

So I came up with the idea of doing a “Simple Sunday Survey” of planet5D subscribers giving them one question so that it is easy to fill out and respond to.

Simple Sunday Survey

Beginning of this past week, and every Sunday from now on, I will be sending and email only to our planet5D subscribers, And reporting on the results here on the blog every Wednesday.

My initial thought was that I was going to do a video report, but due to the holiday insanity and trying to relax by getting away from this silly computer, I didn't make it this week.

My plan was to do the video on Tuesday, But yesterday I went to see the movie “Interstellar” in 4K instead of recording the video. So I failed already but here's my report which I am dictating to my iMac

What's the best video dslr on the market right now?

So “Simple Sunday Survey” to our daily readers this past Sunday was: “What's the best dslr video camera on the market right now?”

Now, to try to keep it simple, I gave them only 3 choices (and they were shown in random order but these are alphabetical):

I figured this would give me some grief because I only gave three options but I could've listed a whole ton of cameras it would've been more difficult pick. So I also gave an “other” box where they could fill in their own answers. But I was specifically interested in the best DSLR video camera on the market today.

Frankly, I was quite surprised by the results. I was completely expecting the Canon EOS 5D Mark III to continue to squash the other two, and frankly I thought the GH4 would come in number two.

Boy was I wrong!

It almost was a dead heat (for a while, the Sony A7s was leading by a large margin too)

And here's what they said (and there were nearly 400 responses so I think the results are pretty good indicator of what's going on out there):

Is that surprising to you?

Others in the “other” category

We also had quite a few honorable mentions in the others category

Of course, a couple of people had to mention that technically the Panasonic GH4 and the Sony A7s are considered “mirrorless” and not DSLRs, but let's ignore that technicality.

“Potato” had one response – which made me laugh…

One person said they use a ‘video camera' for shooting video – well of course that's an option

Someone said “DSLR cameras are overrated” – well I think RED and Alexa are too HaHa (just kidding, they're awesome cameras)

Here are some of the other cameras mentioned:

  • The Canon EOS 1D C had 2.5% of the votes
  • Nikon (grouped) had 2%
  • Black Magic only had .05% of the totals (probably only because I specifically said DSLRs and most people don't consider them in that category)

Of course a question like this is full of possible follow-ups and we will dive into many more of those in the coming weeks.

Does this mean Canon is losing their edge?

Do people only consider cameras that they here been discussed and actually they don't on them? Or are people really buying other cameras in Canon is losing big-time market share?

We will definitely dive into questions about what people are actually buying really soon so keep your eyes peeled on the planet5D stars!

Of course, you're welcome to sound off in the comments below and you can tell everyone what your favorite camera is!
