Blackmagic Design is on a roll with releasing not-quite-full-featured free, light versions of essential movie industry-leading software products. Recently it was DaVinci Resolve 11 Lite and its full, paid version. Now it is visual effects package Fusion 7 Free and the full, paid-for version, Fusion Studio 7.
So budding visual effects artists – and those established moviemakers needing some of Fusion’s effects goodness – can download Fusion 7 Free, practise their chops, create some amazing Hollywood blockbuster-quality effects, motion graphics or 3D animation then graduate to Fusion Studio 7 if they wish.
The only downside? Right now, Fusion 7 is Windows-only.
I don’t have a highfalutin Windows computer and gave up running VM Ware Fusion Pro on my Mac Book Pro when I no longer needed to use Microsoft Visio and Project for a production job I once had. But virtualization products like VM Ware Fusion, Parallels and VirtualBox are there for those who wish to try out Fusion 7 on their Macs.
I will wait for Fusion to be ported to Mac OS X – I'm not a fan of virtualization when using high end production software though I admit virtualisation products have steadily improved over the years.
Hopefully that will not be a long wait. Blackmagic CEO Grant Petty was recently asked the obvious question as to when and his answer was encouraging:
Yes, we are working on a version of Fusion for Mac OS X, but there are some important things to know about that….
We are lucky that the engineering team who has been working on Fusion 7 has kept the codebase very modern and clean so that allows us to move it forward. However there is some Windows specific code in the buttons and menus in Fusion, and that code is being changed out right now. What that means is the time it's going to take to do a Mac OS X version of Fusion is a bit unknown,…
I am sorry I cannot be more specific with timeframes, but it's early days and so this is about the limit of the information I have. But we are all working hard so I hope we have some news soon….
So it looks like a Mac version is on its way but its arrival is not imminent. I look forward to covering that event when it occurs. Meanwhile I recommend checking out Fusion and what it can do for your moviemaking by downloading Fusion 7 Free for Windows or reading the pages on Fusion at the Blackmagic Design website.
Blackmagic Design Revolutionizes the Visual Effects Industry with Fusion 7
Fremont, CA – November 10, 2014 – Blackmagic Design today announced that Fusion 7, the world’s most advanced visual effects and motion graphics software, is now available completely free of charge.
Fusion 7 for Windows can be downloaded from the Blackmagic Design website now.
Previously getting access to high end visual effects tools such as Fusion cost thousands of dollars, so it was more restricted to elite Hollywood visual effects artists. Now with Fusion 7 being available free of charge there is no limit to block anyone from creating world leading visual effects. Blackmagic Design believes this will revolutionize the industry and consumers will be able to watch dramatically better feature films and television shows in the future.
Also announced was Fusion 7 Studio, a complete bundle of VFX and motion graphics solutions with collaborative tools and unlimited network rendering for creative teams and larger facilities. Fusion 7 Studio drastically reduces the cost of setting up multi user studios. Fusion 7 Studio will be available for $995 from Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide.
Fusion has been one of Hollywood’s leading visual effects and motion graphic tools for over 25 years and has been used on thousands of feature film and television projects, including blockbusters like Maleficent, Edge of Tomorrow, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, The Amazing Spider-man 2 and The Hunger Games, as well as hit television shows like Battlestar Galactica, Orphan Black and many more.
