Bypassing a DSLR's intensive compression has real benefits in post production. I've been looking at a number of external recorder options, and the Atomos Blade stands out. Having a higher quality codec like Prores offers cleaner images and more importantly additional “headroom” to work with during color grading and applying effects.
If you're considering adding an external video recorder, do yourself a favor and check out the full article Inter BEE 2013: Live Show Replay: Atomos Samurai Blade Recorder Latest Updates. Newsshooter editor Dan Chung talks with Jeromy Young, CEO of Atomos, about the latest firmware update (free to all existing owners) to the Samurai Blade Prores recorder.
The update adds or improves some very useful features beyond controlling focus and exposure – there's a much more precise waveform monitor (real-time) and enhanced audio recording – now the Atomos Blade has high-precision stereo audio meters and can now discreetly record up to 12 additional tracks of audio.
