‘Midtown’ – a timelapse with a killer soundtrack

If you're a long time reader of planet5D (and I hope you are and I hope you're subscribing to our RSS or daily email), then you'll know I've been a long time fan of timelapses. “Midtown” is about Manhattan and one that I found extremely good for one basic reason, its soundtrack makes it stand out above the others. Not necessarily the music, but the background sounds they've added to make the video feel more alive.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it and it isn't too long, so please have a watch over your morning coffee or lunch break or something – the folks at time magazine sure enjoyed it and so did the editors at vimeo.

Time says:

Time-lapses of Manhattan are nothing new, but this new one called “Midtown” from District 7 Media is particularly enamoring. Sure, it’s shot very well: bright lights, vibrant colors, familiar city sounds pulsating in the background. But perhaps it’s the focus on the one section of Manhattan that many of its residents despise—and even more of its foreign tourists dreamt about for years—that reels you in for a two-minute, 43-second escape.

The man who led the production is Andrew “Drew” Geraci, a Washington, D.C.-based cinematographer who specializes in motion time-lapses and produced the opening sequence for House of Cards. In the description of the video, which was released on Wednesday, he mentions the cameras (four Canon EOS 5D Mark III), the lenses (two Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 II, a Canon 24-105mm f/4 and a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 II) and the slider gear (two of the Dynamic Perception Stage Zero with upgraded stepping motors). That impressive setup captured more than 50,000 still frames shot over the course of six months.

This time-lapse made such an impact on Vimeo that it was designated a “Staff Pick,” and it’s easy to see why. If you’re sitting at an office in Midtown, watch this then go outside. If you’re outside Manhattan, plan a trip. If you can’t leave yet, press replay and sink into the city that never sleeps.

Midtown New York City is the place to be. The lights, cars, traffic, architecture and people make the city come to life as a living, breathing, organism that never sleeps. Take a trip with this time-lapse production into the city and see the sights and sounds that create this magnificent destination.

For us, this time-lapse production was produced using more than 50,000 still frames, shot over the course of 6 months traveling back and forth from Washington DC to New York City. Our main goal was to capture the central part of the city in both visuals and audio. The sound effects used in this production were taken from the various locations we shot and were added in to give you the feeling of actually being there.

There were multiple times during this shoot that we were chased off, either by cops or the cold. The subway shots were particularly difficult to get, especially in the wake of the Boston bombings. We were led out and in some cases followed by police officers or MTA officials who seemed intent on getting us for using tripods.

The music is performed by the talented Danny McCarthy (Fracture)
