rumor alert: Does this ‘exclusive screening’ imply a Canon announcement coming at NAB?

by planetmitch9 Comments

Engadget has posted a story about the latest Canon screening (which planet5D has been invited to as well) and CanonRumors followed up with their own take on the story (see their reports below). Obviously, they've recently announced the Canon EOS 5D Mark III and last fall announced the Canon EOS-1D X, so what could this be?

Could Canon possibly be announcing the 4k HDSLR they teased us with back at the November 3rd Canon EOS C300 announcement? If it does lead to something like a new HDSLR or if it is ‘just' a showing of new Cinema EOS technology, planet5D will be there to bring you the news!

With both its 1D and 5D-series models already confirmed for 2012, today's Canon teaser hints at something slightly different — and, according to our sources, a major announcement. The event is set for April 15th — during the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show in Las Vegas — further confirming that whatever imaging device we'll see will likely be geared towards the motion picture and television communities. So, what could it be? A new Cinema EOS cam with a 1D form-factor? A lower-priced model poised to compete with the RED Scarlet?

New Gear for NAB 2012?
Canon has started to tease with Cinema EOS again. Are we going to see new products announced prior to the show? We’ve heard the 4K Cinema EOS DSLR would be announced “sooner than later”. Others have said it could be the Ron Howard project (thanks unfocused) being shown. We’ll be at NAB to find out.

The event will take place on Sunday, April 15, 2012 at 5PM

I doubt it’s a product announcement. The invite is for a ‘screening’ so I think it’ll be Ron Howard’s film. My2cents.

I really hope it ISN’T a Howard screening, honestly. That would be even more of a disappointment considering the lackluster video updates via the MKIII as it is.

Besides, it can’t be too “exclusive” if the film was already broadcasted online recently. May be somewhat redundant.

I really DO hope it’s the 4K DSLR announcement. Already waiting w/ money in hand on whether I stick with Canon in this or head on over to the uber hacked GH2.

You should add some point and shoot to your list, because you have $800, $3500 and at least $5000 camera already in considering :)

Maybe it will be a firmware update to the C300 allowing 4K recording. I’m pretty sure the camera is capable of it and this would certainly give a boost to sales.

For me it’s obviously its the new Cinema EOS…. look at the invitation itself… the Multicolor Out Of Focus Line…. its on the EOS Cinema LOGO.

and this new product is so competing with Nikon’s attempt to enter the HDSLR Market….

Canon knows their Stuff…. the 5DmkII was suppose to be a photographers camera…i know it became a huge hit for filmmakers… but with the 5dmkIII i see a new reapproach on the photography side… 61 AF points. 6fps FullFRame. watter resistant.. etc… EOS Cinema is all about filmmaking… probably will have slightly crappier AF… but the processor will be used to handle audio, ISO and more Software Uses.

Canon know how to market their prodcuts….

People on a Budget can get the EOS Dslr line and make gorgeous video.

Filmmakers who look for the HDSLR form factor and can afford a c300 will go for the EOS Cinema Line.

People go really get paid well, will go for the C300 and so on.
