planet5D live Canon EOS 5D Mark III Q&A now ready for you to watch!

by planetmitch9 Comments

After several starts and problems uploading this huge archive of the planet5D live Q&A about the Canon EOS 5D Mark III with Barry Andersson, Carl Olson, and Chris Fenwick, it is now available. So sit back and watch!

I did have to split it into 2 parts and upload only in SD quality because the file was just so massive.

I am uploading audio only versions – will post those here when they're available.

part 1

On March 2nd, Canon announced the hot new Canon EOS 5D Mark III and we put together a crew of 4 (including me) to discuss the new camera and to answer questions from the planet5D live chat room!

Joining me were Barry Andersson (author of The DSLR Filmmaker's Handbook: Real-World Production Techniques (available on amazon blog.planet5d.com/barry), and from the Digital Convergence Podcast (digitalfilm.tv/digital-convergence-podcast/): Carl Olson and Chris Fenwick.

Barry and I were blessed to have a hands on preview of the Canon EOS 5D Mark III the week before so we had plenty of answers to questions!

  1. Love the argument that because of inflation the $1,000 more is justified. When they announced the C300 it was $20,000 a month later they brought it down to $16,000. What happen to inflation there. Canon like any other corporation will try to screw you with whatever they can get away with. These guys are obviously in Canon’s pockets.

I object to your classification of us as being ‘in Canon’s pockets’ – in fact none of us are being paid by Canon nor do they give us gear. Why in the world would you say something mean like that?

  2. This broadcast is really BORING !

Most of the time, you guys are saying the same things over and over:

    “That’s a good question”
    “I’m not sure”
    “I don’t remember”
    “I’m not 100%”

And on top of that, you don’t master the subject at all. You guys should have been prepared with datasheets and so forth !

    Bad show !

Sorry you didn’t care for the broadcast. We had fun and I hope most of the others who watched did too. Maybe next time we’ll have something you’ll like better.

  3. I’ve been ragging on and on about backward compatibility ever since the d3 was announced. Canon finally responded with:
The batteries that you have been using with your EOS 5D Mark II will be compatible with the EOS 5D Mark III. The CF card is also compatible, plus the EOS 5D Mark III also allows the use of SD Memory cards too. Unfortunately, we are not familiar with the Habbycam cage, but here are the dimensions of both cameras:
    EOS 5D Mark III: 152 x 116.4 x 76.4mm
    EOS 5D Mark II: 152 x 113.5 x 75.0mm
Still missing is an off camera swtich for tuning on live-view and video. You still must remove your hand from the pan-head handle to perform these functions – an action that takes your eye off the viewfinder and adds camera shake to the shot. Ok if you’re in a controlled environment, but if you’re shooting doc style it’s a pain in the patootie

  6. Geez Allan what do you expect. Planet Mitch and Barry had the new camera in hand for a very short time, and were limited as to what they could do with it. So, instead of being inconsiderate of ones effort to give you as much information as could be gotten, try thanking that person for a change.
Thank you, Planet Mitch, for all your efforts! See, now that wasn’t so bad, now was it!
