The Lockport Universal HDMI port protector now available

by planetMitch3 Comments

The folks over at LockCircle have added another device to their HDSLR HDMI port protection devices – the LockPort UNIVERSAL will fit any baseplate and it will solve many of your issues with HDMI cables that don't stay connected during a shoot.

These are the same guys making the planet5D LockCircle – you can still get one!

Our friend Mike Kobal has also been testing the LockPort UNIVERSAL and has a review that he's let us borrow a bit of…

Mike Kobal's input

from Mike's review of the LockPort UNIVERSAL

I received the LockPort UNIVERSAL two days ago and can't believe I survived without one! As much as I enjoy my Zacuto Pro EVF and Cineroid, essential add-ons for video shooters, I don't trust the flimsy mini HDMI connection on the camera. Actually, I hate it. The slightest touch to the HDMI cable might interrupt the signal to the EVF. Read on after the break

On my last photo shoot we fooled around with video again, 95% was shot handheld and we changed locations a lot, I lost signal on about 50% of takes! and had to ask the models to do it again, not a big deal since video wasn't part of the assignment, we had a great time and no one noticed or cared. Now just imagine this happens on a job, a challenging focus pull, suddenly no signal and you have to ask the talent to redo the scene because there was a technical problem with your equipment. No one will hold it against you if this happens once, but if this keeps happening over and over, you will most certainly loose the client and your name as DOP will be tarnished. Luckily my recent jobs required a tripod and it never happened since I gaffa taped everything to ensure a rigid connection to the camera. See photo below(tape around the cable then tape it to the camera, minor improvement, works on tripod if you stay stationary, certainly not rock solid and kinda ugly)OLD_SOLUTION
But after my last handheld shoot I was ready to give up on my beloved Canon 5D2 because if this keeps happening, I can't trust it on real assignments. And shooting without an EVF? Unimaginable, esp for wide open, shallow depth of field scenes. So, this is IT! Get one! Problem solved.

  1. You keep saying the universal protects the 5d and 7d’s – does that mean all camera’s in the 5d line? Does it protect the 5d mark 2 AND 5d mark 3? The website is extremely vague. There should also be more information about the USB protection working with the HDMI protector. It looks like an entirely different connection, and a few words describing everything would help sales. I was on their site a few times, and I always leave without buying anything. It looks like a rock solid product, but there should be better descriptions, perhaps chat with a sales rep, or make the phone number readily available too. I think these products are a vastly better than other HDMI protection options, if they made their site a little more buyer friendly – like having a shopping cart so you can buy items from multiple pages!!! The way it is now, you have to buy from each page separately. Thats crazy!! I want to buy, I really do. Please work on your descriptions and the rest of the issues listed – THEK it won’t be so hard to pull the trigger on buying your product. I am sure those who have seen your gear in use are very happy with it – and can buy right away – but I have never seen it in real life, I haven’t gone to your booth at a camera convention – and neither have the masses. Don’t you want to sell your goods to as many people as possible?
