continuing the planet5D and stillmotion partnership, stillmotion has announced the next theme in the short film contest – “simple”. This is something they've been doing for a while and we're going to be working together to not only promote the contest, but planet5D will host the discussion about the videos while stillmotion will host the contest itself. Rules are here and more info: stillmotion blog
The ‘simple' contest
it's time for the next short film contest. with over twenty entries in the last round, i can't wait to see what we get out of this one. i am always surprised at such innovation and diversity in the ideas and i hope that everybody both participating or just watching takes note of how many different takes on a simple concept there can be. the take home there, for me, really speaks to just how much each of us as a filmmaker has a unique voice in what and how we say something. with so much diversity in a piece based on only one word, how much is left unsaid when we put together our own short, commercial, or wedding film because we get so stuck with how it ‘should' look.
so let's keep that innovation going and see what y'all can come up with for the theme: simple. i love ‘simple' because it can be used within the narrative or in how the piece is shot/put together.
the grand prize for the best overall film, chosen by the SM team, is a spot to any one of our deconstructing the story workshops put on by Canon this may/june (a $1499 value).we will be touring through orlando, cincinnati, new york, austin, seattle. check out Canon's site (by clicking here) for a full list of dates when we will be in each city. deconstructing the story is a full three day workshop in which we explore how you can use so many different facets of film making (light, color, composition, camera movement, audio, etc) to serve and propel your story. over the course of the three days we will rotate through exercises in each facet (day 1), create a short film in small teams (day 2), and then edit the pieces together and work through post storytelling while also giving time for feedback and questions (day 3).
second place, chosen by cinevate, is a cinevate simplis solo rig (a $400 value). since the launch of the simplis the SM team has been using these on so many of their shoots because they allow for so much versatility but still keep us small. this little base plate can be used to hold a cyclops (also by cinevate), a monitor, or even a zoom off to the side. you can add shoulder or hand grips and truly customize your rig or keep it small and throw the cyclops/monitor and zoom all onto a monopod.
as with last time, we have planet5D on board to help spread the word. full critiques of the top films will be posted in our dedicated section on their forum (which you can find by clicking here). all of the other entries will receive written feedback via email.
grand prize: one spot to the ‘deconstructing the story' workshop in any city on the tour (orlando, cincinnati, new york, austin, seattle)
second place: a cinevate simplis solo rig
best cinematography: one $99/5yr music license from WE.
deadline: may 9th at 1PM
