planet5D forum improvements – twitter + facebook connect and more

by planetmitch3 Comments

We told you earlier about some improvements to the planet5D forum software – well, the hits keep coming! Today, we've added the ability to connect with Twitter or Facebook instead of making a new registration. We've also got some hints to improve your reading enjoyment below (especially if you can't see all of a video!) – things like viewing the latest posts and doing Facebook “likes” are further down the post.

Twitter and Facebook login

I know it is sometimes hard to ‘register' for yet another website – I often see things that I'd like to maybe respond to in forums, yet I don't want to go thru the registration process to join because it does take some time. Now, you don't have to do that for the planet5D forums if you have a Twitter or Facebook account. All you have to do is to link one (or both) of these services to the planet5D forums and from then on, you can just connect to the forums. Here's a fast look at that process:

  1. Notice the new icons for twitter and facebook on the login button – click it
  2. In the popup, don't put in your userid and password if you already have an account – click the button “or sign in with these services”
  3. Steps 1 and 2 of connecting Facebook and Twitter

  4. Next, pick the service you want to connect – you can do both, but you'll have to go thru this process once for each
  5. Steps 1 and 2 of connecting Facebook and Twitter

Step 3 of connecting Facebook and Twitter

  6. Depending on your existing planet5D forum account, select one of the forms to fill out.
  7. Steps 1 and 2 of connecting Facebook and Twitter

Steps 4 of connecting Facebook and Twitter

For the fourth step, there are two options depending on if you already have an existing planet5D forum account. If you haven't already registered for planet5D forums, then in the box in the lower left, all you have to do is to pick a user ID and to enter your email address twice. If you do have a planet5D forum account, then simply enter your forum user ID (the form says to enter your email address – but I found that if I entered my planet5D forum user ID then it worked – it never worked by entering my forum email address!)

Once you connect Twitter and Facebook, you'll see new preferences in your control panel:

Also new functionality

When you've hooked up Twitter and Facebook, you can update your status in all 3 areas from your planet5D forum profile:

Update Twitter and Facebook status from your planet5D Forum profile

And, you can “like” posts on the forum – click the like button in the footer:

Hide and show the right hand navigation

Something I have learned that many people aren't seeing is the ability to hide the right hand navigation bar – which makes the visibility of videos and the forum posts much better. There's a little set of arrows between the two sections (and it is a small icon) that will show and hide the navigation options. This is one of the reasons I picked this forum template! But sadly, most people haven't seen it.

Here's an example of what a post with a video looks like if you haven't hidden the right hand navigation and after you have hidden it:

View latest posts

A shortcut that will help your viewing pleasure is the “View recent posts” link – which is on every page! This will keep you from having to go into each section to see what is new – which is bad for my page hit counts but great for you. This is the page I use many times a day to watch what is going on!

I think I got that all right. Connected and synced with twitter and facebook. I can share with facebook, but I get Action Failed when I try to retweet a forum entry. Have tried Safari, Chrome and FF
