A couple of weeks ago, Ricky Montalvo from Yahoo! Sports contacted us about their choice to use the Canon EOS 5D Mark II (reviews) HDSLR cameras to record and report on the World Cup. Here's Ricky's introduction to what they're doing:
“First off, let me say what an invaluable site your blog has been. Second, I work for Yahoo!'s video team and we produce original content for our properties such entertainment and sports. 3 of us “video producers” will be heading to So. Africa for the World Cup and we'll be using the 5D's regularly. I'll be reporting from “behind the scenes” and would love to share some of our stories & feature vids on your blog.”
And here's his first report from the field (all videos were shot on the Canon EOS 5D Mark II):
“It's been just 8 days, and I am happy to say that the Canon 5D is the perfect camera for ENG style shooting at the World Cup. I'm part of a 4 man crew and we have 2 5D's which we are now using for over 90% of our footage thus far. One of the key advantages of using the 5D's is size and inconspicuous presence when under such a tightly controlled environment like the World Cup.
We're also not weighed down in gear, with only a tripod and backpack, this is truly a “backpack” journalism adventure. Our primary kits include the Sennheiser Evolution G3 100 Series for audio, Zacuto Z-finder and a variety of lenses such as the Ziess 80mm f/1.4, Canon 24-70mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.8.
We've also utilized the cameras for our daily World Cup segments with Charissa Thompson and Marcelo Balboa which are shot at night and the Johannesburg skyline twinkling in the background.
One of our favorite features shot with the 5D was the opening World Cup concert using the Ziess 85mm f/1.4 lens. The depth and “bokeh” the lens provides helps us really isolate the scene so we can really take the viewer to the scene. We are here for 4 more weeks and we have many more shoots planned with the 5D.
And one more video:
We'll have much more coming from the Yahoo! Sports team and Ricky Montalvo! Stay tuned!
