New Canon Rebel T2i/550D vs Canon Rebel T1i/500D and vs Canon EOS 7D
Posted on 08. Feb, 2010 by planetMitch in 7D, Reviews, T1i, T2i
Everyone always wants to know where the new cameras fit and what features are different between models. Since Canon announced the Rebel T2i/550D today, we thought we’d compare it side by side with the Canon Rebel T1i/500D and the Canon EOS 7D. And, just to make it interesting, we also threw in the Canon EOS 5D Mark II and the new Canon EOS-1D MKIV.

From Canon on frame rates, they states that the 550D will have the same frame rates as the 7D, 29.97, 25, 23.976, 59.94, 50 fps
“Frame rates including Full HD 1920 x 1080 at 30 (29.97), 25 or 24 (23.976) fps, and HD 1280 x 720 or Standard Definition 640 x 480 quality video, at 60 (59.94) or 50 fps.”

The one revolutionary part may be about the type of cards it accepts: the latest SDXC goes up to 2 Tera and uses a newer FAT filing system which I would hope does not have a 2GB file limit and hence allows for continuous shooting.
Now event videographers can finally use HDSLRs!

The 7D has a contrastbased Autofocus at videomode!!!
You just have to click on the AF-ON button.

So, other than the 7D having dual processors, there really isn’t a huge reason to get a 7D over the 550D.

Continuous shooting has nothing to do with Fat filing or GB size of files. It is simply due to the EU export/import ruling between camcorders and stills-photo cameras.
So this camera, and in fact no future DSLR will have a continuous video shooting option beyond about 12-mins HD and 30-min SD, until the EU taxation rules are changed.

Just a few minor things: the 5d Mk II is able to record in 640×480 and 550D is able to autofocus (contrast) in video mode (according to photoreview)

Two things which are not accurate in this comparison:
1) The contrast based AF works on both the 7D and the T2i (not sure about the T1i) – but is SLOW on all of the cameras.
2) According to Canon’s documentation, the T2i DOES have 3 custom picture styles (if that is what is meant by ’3 sets of memorized settings’).

I think they mean custom modes on the mode switch at the top of the camera, which probably allow custom everything, not only styles

I just filmed my last short film with the canon 550d. The picture Style was Super Flat, and I tweaked the curves on the pc.
Just watch it and enjoy:
