Dan Chung shooting horses in slow motion with the Canon EOS-1D MKIV

A few minutes ago, Dan Chun (@DSLRinformer on twitter) posted his new Canon EOS-1D MKIV video shot at a horse racing track. In fact, not only does Dan have 1 prototype Canon EOS-1D MKIV, but he actually had 2 on hand to shoot this!

I had not one but two 1DmkIV bodies from Canon to play with along with a selection for lenses from a 14mm right up to a 300mm f2.8. I wanted to test not just the low light but the slow motion capability as well so I shot this whole film on 720p/60 and then slowed it down to 23.98 fps using Cinematools, before editing in Final Cut Pro.”

“When Canon Singapore contacted me to see if I wanted to test drive a pre-production shiny new Canon 1DmkIV I jumped at the chance. Up till now I’ve had to lay down my own cash to try the 5DmkII and 7D so this was a great opportunity to form an opinion about the camera without going bankrupt and I was due to be in Singapore anyway for an event at Cathay Photo. I had a few days to really put the camera through it paces shooting mainly at night to see if it lived up to the hype. I’m glad to say that the short answer is that it does and its low light video is truly stellar, easily beating my 5DmkII and 7D

This is my one night shoot at Singapore Turf club using a pre-production Canon Eos1DmkIV loaned by Canon Singapore. It was all shot at 720p/60 and then slowed to 23.98 fps using Cinema tools. Footage is Ungraded. Edited in Final Cut Pro

Thanks to Canon Singapore, Cathay Photo and Yeo Wee Han for all their help.

Im a new but very huge fan of dan’s work. His compositions are superior and he inspires me to no end! He is also a nice person and answered direct emails before. So Dan, 1D worth the extra bucks over the 5d?

I really enjoyed reading your interesting yet very informative insight. In the book of life every page has two sides: we human beings fill the upper side with our plans, hopes and wishes, but providence writes on the other side, and what it ordains is seldom our goal. Thank you for sharing and I am looking forward to reading more of your very current blog postings!!! :D Shooter Game
